Honoring Military Kids with Some Fun at the Ballpark

The month of April is where we all take some time to focus on military children and thank them and their families for the sacrifices that they make for us all. In an effort to continuously honor military kids, Veterans United has organized an event in collaboration with the St. Louis Cardinals for the last few years called Military Kids Day at the Ballpark.

Let’s take a look at how this program continues to honor military kids.

History of the Event

The idea of Military Kids Day at the Ballpark came together in 2017 to provide a group of military kids with a deployed parent the opportunity to attend a major league baseball game together. In collaboration with Veteran’s United, the National Guard selected a group of families to attend a St. Louis Cardinals game together for a day.

All of the kids that were in attendance had an opportunity to take their mind away from the stress of having a parent being deployed for a few hours and watch the Cards play.

The age range of the kids ranged from 2 - 18, and each kid was able to get some on-field time with the players during batting practice. The Cardinals showed all of the kids on the jumbotron, and provided an opportunity to serve as the PA announcer for an inning.

Thank you all for a wonderful evening. Mason and I had such a good time! He loved getting to go on the field and see the baseball players up close. That is definitely something neither of us have ever done before. It will be something we remember for a long time to come.

Other Ways to Honor Military Families

There are plenty of other ways to honor our military families throughout the year.

Here are a few ideas:

  • Participate in veteran community events.
  • Visit a nearby veteran hospital.
  • Send a care package to a military family.
  • Offer encouragement and kind words.
